Southeast Wisconsin puts the ground through a freeze-thaw cycle for months, and water in the soil expands as it freezes. That is frost heave, and it is the single biggest reason patios and walkways lift, tilt, and crack around here. The fix is not a fancier paver - it is what goes underneath. A patio built on a thin base over undisturbed clay will move; a patio built on a deep, compacted aggregate base with proper drainage stays put. A good base is overbuilt and graded to move water away from the house on purpose, because that is the part you cannot redo later. When an older patio has already heaved or sunk, the base is usually the real culprit, which is why repair and restoration done right starts there instead of just re-leveling the surface.
One question worth asking - of any contractor
Ask whoever you hire (including the contractor we connect you with) to photograph the base before it gets covered. The compacted gravel you never see is the reason a patio lasts decades instead of a few seasons - and a contractor who builds it right will be glad to show you.
Pavers vs poured concrete
Two good options - different strengths.
Poured concrete is one solid slab; a paver patio is hundreds of interlocking units over a flexible base. For most Kenosha County yards, that flexibility - plus the ability to lift and reset a single paver - is why we lean toward pavers. But concrete has its place, and we will tell you straight.
